"Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies..." Joshua 7:12
The Loss of Virtue
Samuel Adams, the great American patriot accused by King George III of being "the chief rabble-rouser" of American independence, wrote in a letter to James Warren in 1779:
"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. How necessary then is it for those who are determined to transmit the blessings of liberty as a fair inheritance to posterity, to associate on public principles in support of public virtue." Taken from The American Patriots Bible, published by Thomas Nelson, Edited by Richard G. Lee.
When looking at our current state of affairs across the United States, can we not see the prophetic results of a nation under God falling away from His grace? Rather than uphold the virtue of the sanctity of life, a real and important principle of our U.S. Constitution and of God's Word, the public turns away from Christian principles and embraces abortion, theft, disobeying authority, and complete disregard for property rights.
The loss of virtue in our culture leads us down a path full of stumbling blocks instead of stepping stones. We seem to have chosen a way construed to make our lives better, easier, simpler. What we receive are more laws, regulations, and invasions of our privacy through legislation. But even legislation cannot turn our country around. Only our concerted effort to re-establish virtue will accomplish such a feat.
With an election cycle upon us, we have the opportunity to elect statesmen/women for the local school board up through the town councils, county legislatures, state governments, and US Senators and Representatives. If we don't stand for virtue now, we'll surely fall away from liberty so far God will have no choice but to bring us to submission.
How will you transmit the blessings of liberty as a fair inheritance to your descendants?
